Our class participated in the Caritas Challenge from the 18th-19th of May. The Caritas Challenge is an event that helps fund-raise for people living in third-world countries - countries that are not currently in a state of development; places either too conflicted or too poor to begin development. The Challenge is a time where you can participate in 4 different challenges - Sweat It, Move It, Work It, and Live It. Our class chose the Live It category, where you have to live a card-board shelter for 24-hours. After 12 hours, we were required to write a reflection on some questions. Here are the questions and my answers.
1. What does "One day of difference for a lifetime of change mean"?
We can live in similar conditions for one day that benefits people living this terribly everyday.
2. What are some of the main challenges during the day and the night?
Day - Socialising with different people, learning about poverty that happens in NZ and in other countries, and boredom!
Night - Listening to teachers as a group, not getting too tired in the morning, and going to sleep!
3. Do you think the simulation we are having compares to what people actually live?
With risk of health violations and mischief from boredom, poverty is not very fun. People who live in these conditions, however, can still make the most of what they do have; basic shelter, food, and clothing.
4. How could we support the City Mission?
Although it may seem like a good idea, you shouldn't donate to homeless people on the street. They could be faking, so treat them kindly but don't give away anything until the City Mission actually can verify they're truly in need.
5. What does Social Justice and empathy mean?
Expectations
May not
Prove simple
Always
To be sure

You can do it!
