Kaupeka Year 7/8 Camp

As the clouds and fields melted into a multi-coloured blur, and the rain lashed the bus windows harder than ever, we had begun our adventure to Camp. Yes, it was some of the most unlucky weather ever experienced, but the air was full of something other than fog and rain: excitement. After a few slips in the trail, a couple of dead possums, and two hours of walking we could finally settle in. My top three (I can't narrow it down to one) favourite things were: Number Three - the nearly always open games room. This was pretty much the hangout for everyone when you were bored, had no friends around or were looking to get social. Apart from the 'an adult must be present rule' this was the best place to kill time. And we had a lot of time to kill (with Canyoning/ Abseiling called off...)

Number Two - The Quality Food. After having multiple experiences with camping, I've come to expect cheap canned food being slopped onto your plate, but the standard of the food here blew me away. With so much variety and opportunities to try new foods, mealtimes became a less dreaded experience.

And Number One: The activities. Even if you count out free time, there were still seven stunning things that you got to participate in over the space of two days. Each one was different, but they still were all enjoyable and no surprise to anyone why they were selected.

Have you ever been on a camping trip before?

Using Thinking to Make and Solve Problems!

Last Friday, as part of our new Project-Based Learning style, we were given a certain amount of time to solve a task while using creative or logical thinking to work it out. In this particular session, we sorted ourselves into groups of four and each group was provided with a bag of Lego. The task was to use the Lego (which did not come with instructions) to make something new out of it. My groups final design was a Portable Thirst Remover, a vehicle that can be used to quench thirst in all areas. Here are a few pictures of the machine.

What the best thing you ever made with Lego?
Have you ever try to make something different out of the packets you have at home?
